My father’s court case finally over

April 9, 2021 by heatherss 6 Comments

On the 25th of June 2016 my father was hit by a drunk driver and he was never the same after that. Neither was my mother. He spent a good few months in hospital on ventilation and was discharged to a rehab facility on his birthday in September. He stayed there until just before Christmas. I … [Read more...]

I miss you, Dad.

November 4, 2017 by heatherss 15 Comments

My father took his last breath while I was on the beach with Nicky. Nicky was running back and forth in the water with his hands up like a traffic officer, telling the waves to stop rolling in. “You can’t stop the waves from coming, Nicky.” You can’t stop death from coming either. My … [Read more...]

A very special Christmas 2016

January 4, 2017 by heatherss 3 Comments

We really enjoyed our holiday this year. It was the first time in four years that we have been down to the Eastern Cape as a family, and it was good to spend time with family and friends. Nicky had such a good time too, and we are so grateful to have had this time away, thanks to our housesitter, … [Read more...]

Dad made it to Rehab!

balloons in ICU

You know that song "They tried to make me go to rehab and I said no, no, no..." In our case rehab is something we have really been looking forward to, getting out of hospital, so it is more of a case of "Yes, yes, yes!" And thank God we have made it.   My father is in rehabilitation! What … [Read more...]

Dad: Still Smiling Despite the Circumstances

August 22, 2016 by heatherss 8 Comments

After an absence of two months, I returned to PE to visit you in ICU. The first time I saw you it was a bit of a shock. You have lost so much weight. You remind me so much of your mother. That same spark, that same smile and zest for life. But the same thinness and age that I saw in her. Your … [Read more...]

My Father is in ICU

inspiring poem in ICU

It is pretty hard to write this post. It has been easier to work on other things like posts about giving away Dora tickets than to acknowledge what is going on in my life. Entering numbers in spreadsheet for my data capture job rather than putting into words what has occurred in our family. My … [Read more...]

Grateful for readers, bloggers, tweeters and family

March 15, 2015 by heatherss 6 Comments

This post will be a kind of different one today. I'm going to dedicate this post to some very special people, without which this blog would not exist, and they really have helped me on my way. 1. Readers. Yes that's you. Thank you for reading this blog. Thank you to the people who took my survey … [Read more...]

Father’s Day

June 19, 2011 by heatherss 14 Comments

-He is such a cheerful positive person who has taught me the importance of looking on the bright side. In fact looking at the flowers instead of the rain is something he has instilled in me. -I admire him for starting up his hardware business by himself and now employing a load of … [Read more...]
