Nicky watches a lot of how to / building kind of videos and recently got it into his head that he wants to make slime. So I went over to crafter blogger Rebecca’s blog (In these Stillettos) and tried out this recipe. We had lots of fun with the slime… right up until the time it landed on the carpet.
But let me start at the beginning.
HOW TO MAKE SLIME with local South African products
You’ll need:
a bottle of 100ml arts and crafts glue -100ml (Bostick)- 100ml water (we poured this into the glue bottle with a funnel)
- 1/2 teaspoon Borax (Buffalo) dissolved in 1/4 cup boiling water
- drop of food colouring (Moirs)
Method:
- Mix the water and glue. We used a wooden spoon to stir.
2. In a cup put the hot water and borax together. At this point add the colouring and if you want, some glitter.
3. Put everything together. If you didn’t put the glitter in yet you can still add it. Ours looked more spotty than glittery though. You’ll see the slime clump together and you can discard excess water but we managed to stir everything in.
4.Have fun.
But not too much fun.
Warning: do not let your kid play with this stuff unsupervised. He got the slime on his clothes and on his pajamas.
Then the next morning (which happened to be a Sunday. Mother’s Day) he decides he wants to play with his slime. All I want is sleep so I don’t watch him. Mistake number one.
Then he says the slime is “too cold”. So I let him put it in the microwave. Mistake number two.
Now the slime is more liquid and he is having lots of fun with it. Too much fun.
My husband and I are lying in the bed and he crawls in to make tunnels (as usual). We notice there’s some slime on his pajamas so we take them off.
When I finally get out the bed I have a huge shock.
There is a pool of slime next to our bed.
There is slime down the passage.
At this point we did not check the rest of the house but got working on the bedroom. On further investigation th
ere was also slime (although to a lesser extent) in his room and the lounge.
My conclusions:
-Scrape it. I scraped as much as I could off. Some off the stuff that was still more sold – this worked really well.
-Vinegar is amazing. I poured the stuff neat on the worst spots and then got to work with a cloth and some water too.
-I went back to work later with some Vanish. But I still think Vinegar is the best.
-Never leave your kid alone with slime. That is all. At least he had fun.
PS I have to add that I love my child dearly and he gave me the most precious Mother’s Day gift. A personalised message written out by his teacher. Just so him. Plus a meaningful cup and lavender body wash. A school activity where they chose gifts for their mom. I love that he knows I like lavender.

It’s fine just a lot of cleaning up!
I think it’s fine for skin but definitely toxic to eat so you have to watch those under 3’s!
