Baby Wearing Challenges

July 29, 2013 by heatherss 9 Comments

Today I did a dreadful thing. I turned around and hit Nicky’s head into the kitchen door. I was wearing him in a baby carrier on my back. This, in an attempt to keep him close and safe. But that curious little head pops around and…. we have a disaster on our hands.

But let me start at the beginning.

The reason he landed up in the baby carrier was that I was busy cooking in the kitchen and it was the last resort in a series of “stop Nicky crying”. Nicky will push the object of his affection quite happily for a while outside the kitchen for a limited period of time (in this case, his scooter) until that moment when he’s had enough.

The first two cries I fed him booby. One from each side. The third time I fed him some yoghurt. (Shock and amazement: he sat in his high chair without crying and ate quite happily). The next time we changed the nappy. After that, I was out of ideas and knew I had to put him on my back.

I have a baby carrier I use which will place him securely on my back. It is easy to get him in and out of. The problem is:

1) his little legs dangle without being properly supported

2) it is a bit of a strain, pulling on my shoulders.

So, to support the carrier I put a scarf around the whole lot, but it doesn’t really stay on. I’ve also tried a towel (African style), but I’m not strong enough to tie it securely. My wrap works great when he is in the front, but I have no idea how I would get him in on the back.

So after the head crashing incident, I remembered a video that I had seen on You Tube. This enterprising young lady used 3 old T-shirts to make a wrap. I’m not sure how secure it would be by itself but as an extra support in this situation, I think it would really help. I have a lot of old T-shirts. So I used the two to support his bum and the other to wrap around his body. You can watch the video here:

As you can see, it worked really well to support his body.

Now I just need to remember to be careful when I turn. That little head is still peeping round the corner…

That is very smart! I couldn’t ever stand to wear my son on my back due to the shoulder strain. I had even spent a good amount of money on a very high quality carrier. And to think I could’ve used some tshirts.

very smart indeed! i had the same carrier and loved it, although i actually never once used it on my back! i always had him on the front. i loved the forced snuggling and the convenience…wish he still fit in it! 😉

How innovative to use T-shirts!! I loved wearing my babies – I miss it now that they are too big! I had the ergo carrier which worked well for me in either the front or the back but it seems like you’ve found a much thriftier option.

What kind of SSC did you use where his legs were dangling? I had a Snugli that did that. I have never had the courage to try the Torso carry. How old did you babywear until?

I don’t know what kind it was. I babywore at the shops with him forward facing till he was 18 months. He used to “push” the trolley like that! Now he sits in the trolley.

[…] Nicky’s push tricycle. Nicky has never been a fan of his stroller. We’ve always been baby wearers and although I stopped wearing him at 18 months the stroller still sits there, pretty much unused. […]
