Footprint (in which I discover I’m not crafty) Craft

October 30, 2013 by heatherss 12 Comments

1381326_608684765839935_2043823145_nThere is a rather brilliant picture going around Facebook at the moment. It says “All these moms on Facebook making rainbow spaghetti and homemade playdoh. I’m like… I had a shower today and kept the kids alive, go me!”

I can honestly agree with the sentiment behind those words. Except my priority is to keep Nicky alive, not have a shower. (I didn’t manage that today..)

bigDon’t you find some people like to give gifts that require work? A well meaning Facebook friend sent me this picture of an adorable stepping stone craft. It really looks cute. I was thinking it could be nice to repeat as he gets older and the foot becomes bigger.

It was easy enough to make the dough. Salt, flour and water. But to get Nicky to make an impression? Hard as anything.

Randburg-20131023-00726First he wanted to play with it. That’s understandable. But the sides of the container were not conductive to putting a foot in, so I changed the bowl to a flatter one. A kiddie one from my own childhood, actually.

Randburg-20131023-00728To get his foot in was a big mission and he cried like anything. I made a bit of a mess up and two impressions on top of each other together with a crying baby was enough for me to give up. I put the dough in the fridge.

photo (2)The next time I tried I got a good impression. Yes, he cried again. But now I had a nice round shape in my plate and it was ready for the oven.

Of course I had forgotten one crucial aspect to this task. Once the print had set, I couldn’t get it out.

Frustration! Now I had to destroy it….

photoThird time lucky the dough took super quick to make and Nicky did not even cry this time. Perhaps he was now getting used to me shoving his foot in dough. I put it in a cake tin and baked it. You can see the result in the picture.

But I have to say that this whole task just had too many mistakes and tears to make it worth it. Perhaps if you decide to do it you can avoid my errors and do better.

Footprint craft:
Mix half a cup of flour, half a cup of salt and a quarter cup of water. (I did land up adding more water). Bake in the oven for three hours at 100 degrees Celsius. (That’s 200 F). The last one I ran out of patience and only did two hours.
Many thanks to http://thewhoot.com.au/whoot-news/great-school-holiday-activities from where this idea comes.

I can relate – we made handprint ornaments as gifts last year and there were just as many failures as successes but I’m hoping that when I’m older and look at the ornaments I just remember how cute their little hands were and not how many I ended up giving to the girls to smash on the cement floor – they really enjoyed breaking the failures.

I have this problem all the time. I love crafts, but my result is never what I want it to be and often times it’s totally awful LOL!
