I can hardly believe my little one is six weeks already!
With two doctor visits
lined up for the week, the sister at the clinic said we could leave over her visit and the vaccines till week 7, which I’m not looking forward to.
In any case on Wed we went off to the gynae. Little Nic was actually very good and slept in his car seat for most of the time, or staring at me with big eyes in the waiting room. He only started crying when I went in to be examined, but fortunately the receptionist scooped him up and looked after him. I got Dr K to write me some scripts (save me a trip to the GP) and he also got me to do some blood tests.
It turns out that my hemoglobin and iron levels are too high, so I’ve stopped taking the iron tablets he prescribed during my pregnancy.
On Thurs we went to the pediatrician, Dr J. I loved the brightly coloured rooms and murals. They even had a lovely feeding room which had coffee things and a changing table. I had to make use of it because he was very late.
Little Nic is doing great but I had a few questions about some things that were bothering me.
1. His one eye always seems to have sleep in it. Dr J said just to keep it clean and hope it cleared up within a year; the alternative would be to operate and he is still too little for that.
2. He has excema on the sides of his face and around his neck. Dr J. said to use aqueous cream and SBR cream (skin barrier).
He also made the suggestion to help breastfeeding to
A) Drink 3 liters of water a day. I think this is a bit much and also my mom says it is not necessary. But what I have decided to do is to mix up the jungle juice again, but instead of using the boxed apple juice, rather use an apple concentrate.
B) Unblock his nose with a nasal spray. I have noticed him sniffing a bit and pulling away when feeding, and I thought it was more a bad latch, but now I realize his nose is also the problem.
So off we went to the pharmacy to get these supplies and then it was home sweet home.
Hope you all are having a great week.

What a gorgeous smile he has – we used to use rooibos tea for eczema and it worked really well. We either brewed a strong cup to add to bath water or more often I would just brew a cup and apply it directly with cotton wool after baths. Is the eye a blocked tear duct? I hope it clears up soon. Six weeks already – they grow so fast!

Thanks, I have been trying the rooibos tea.

Have you been told that breastmilk is very good for helping to clear blocked tear ducts, which easily block because they are so tiny, which could be the cause of the sleep in his eye? Try using breastmilk when you clean it and hopefully it will clear quickly.
PS. Considering we should all be drinking 2 liters of water per day, I don’t think an additional litre is too much while you are breastfeeding, the extra fluid will be replacing what you are giving to Little Nic.
Allow your self plenty of rest and don’t try to do too much too soon, so you can enjoy being a Mommy, as you’ve already discovered, the time will fly by so quickly.

Yes, I did try breastmilk first.

Congratulations Heather, enjoy your beautiful baby.
My suggestion would be to wait a little before vaccination as your baby’s immune system appears already overloaded and toxic additives in vaccines might not be beneficial right now. It’s early days and sometimes baby needs time to settle. Often small problems will just disappear.
Breast feeding is great. You might need to reduce sugar in your diet, fruit juice has a lot of it. Please be careful with nasal sprays, Nic’s tiny body is doing its best to get rid of toxins.
Have you used essential oils? They do no harm and produce good results.
Oatmeal is good for eczema.
Listen to your instincts and follow your heart. A first time mother is very wise where her baby is concerned. Professionals are great, but, depending on their training, they can tend to just push certain ideas and are often quick to use ointments etc that are too strong for baby’s skin.
Best wishes, and enjoy your lovely baby.

Tons of fluids is necessary I’d say. I drink a lot, oatmeal with apple or pineapple and anise tea (helps him with gas). Nasal spray not yet, better breastmilk, as well as for the eyes. Before you apply the cream for the excema, clean his face and neck with a chamomille tea extract with a bit of cotton wool. I clean my baby’s face with that every morning or if milk drips on his face to clean it up.

He is gorgeous. My daughter had a major problem with eczema with her younger son and she found that the Olitum products helped the most for him and once she started using it in the bath etc it cleared up very quickly. Every baby is different though. These products are available at Dis-Chem.

Good luck with sorting out his eye! And hopefully the BM will increase. I tried taking Fenogreek but did not make a difference. What did seem to make a bit of a difference was Stoney, but I can’t stomach so much sweet stuff everyday. All the best hope you find the winning solution.
