This is a really fun activity for little boys who love rockets. It is easy to make and a lot fun when it blasts off!
This week my mom has been away and the neighbour has been visiting in the evening to look after Nicky while I go to the hospital. She also is a mom of a boy, although hers is a lot bigger now (in matric). She brought with some lovely books about space that she knew, of course, that Nicky would love. One of these (Scholastic Atlas of Space) has some instructions at the back on how to make a rocket, so we decided to give it a try.
What you’ll need:
- paper printout
- sticky tape
- scissors
- a small container (old film canister or medicine bottle also works)
- effervescent tablets
Method:
- Create the template for the rocket. You can use mine. It’s pretty easy to create on the computer as well. You’ll print this on a full sized A4 sheet.
2. Cut out the rocket wings and fold the edges. Fold them in half to make them smaller and cut them again. (This is because the length is the same as the rocket, if you like that you can keep it like that, but Nicky wanted them smaller)
3. Cut out the circle to make the pointy part of the rocket and cut the wedge out of it.
4. The left half of the template is the part you will make the body out of. You’ll wrap it around the container. The lid must be at the bottom.
5. Sticky tape the wings and cone shaped nose of the rocket on.
6. Place the tablets inside.
7. Add water.
8. Quickly put the lid on and watch as it blasts off!
