Nicky can ride a bike!

July 28, 2019 by heatherss 5 Comments

Something joyful happened to us this week which makes me very grateful to be alive with this miracle little boy of mine right now.

Nicky has been riding his balance bike for years and has been whizzing around on it very well. He seems to have mastered the balance part but we never really got to the part about riding a bike. Brett once saw this bike at a Chinese shop and got it for Nicky. So recently I challenged him to ride it.

The bike was a bit stiff and not really working so well so I decided it was time. Time to get a new bicycle for him.

We went off to Linden Cycle and were pleasantly assisted to find the right one for Nicky. It turned out he needed a 20 inch one, kind of bigger than what I’d thought.

When we got home I held him behind on the seat and with lots of complaining, we got going. Everything was “my fault” as I was not holding it right etc.

My patience was wearing thin so I suggested a snack break. Food always helps. The next time we went out – success! I actually let go and off he went. It was incredible.

I immediately messaged my sister (who is also an OT) who gave us that balance bike all those years ago. She phoned and I was able to to put the video on. She could watch her idea take flight and we were both so proud!

Nicky, you are my little star and I am so very proud of you.

Well done Nicky. I remember doing this with my little one last July. It is such a confidence boost for them to get it.
