Counting the cost of infertility

June 30, 2010 by heatherss 7 Comments

Brett wanted me to do a spreadsheet of everything I have spent on fertiliy. So I decided to do one – just for the past six months. This does not count everything (more than 3 years) that have gone before, but these 6 months were the time that I really got serious about this, with the goal of doing the treatment at the end of it.

So… I’m dividing the rands by seven to get dollars.. so you have a rough idea.

Homeopath = R2244.00 (about $350) and I only did that from January to March.

Vitamins R1516.67 (about $217) I did these throughout, although more in the past two months

Acupuncture R3680 (about $526) started in April, did it every second week and he also gave me homeopathic meds

Online purchase = R507.11 (about $72). This was a fertility conference. Lots of useful information.

Gynae and fertility treatments and injections = R5850 (about $836)

Grand total =R13797.78 (about $1971)

Less the refund from the medical aid (health insurance) before it ran out = R3039.75 (about $434)

Total R10758.03 (about $1537)

By the way my monthly salary is R7000. (about $1000) (I’m a teacher, remember)

Well…

We know that infertility is emotionally a hard time.. but yes, it is expensive too.

Breathe in..

Breathe out..

I have come across a few other forums related to this subject in the past couple of days in doing a research report for my project. I have to say that what you’re saying here makes perfect sense and is helping me to get my head around this subject. Do you have any other forums you could recommend to help my research?

Thanks Nancy! Fortunately my husband got a tax refund which has helped a bit!

    Hi Chiropractor
I don’t know where to look (other than – Google is your friend). If I were you I would approach people who have actually been through it and written things down. Blogs and forums are good. The thing is it works out more than what they quote. I was told I would need a certain amount of injections and landed up having to have a lot more. These are the kinds of extra expenses that are not quoted, but you have to land up paying for.
Also I think all the alternative therapy is really worth paying for, mostly because it not only helps your fetility but has good side benefits (eg both homeopath and acupuncturist helped my anemia). As a chiropractor I’d be interested to hear how you help infertiles too.

Hey – nice blog, just looking around some blogs, seems a pretty nice platform you are using. I’m currently using WordPress for a few of my sites but looking to change one of them over to a platform similar to yours as a trial run. Anything in particular you would recommend about it?

thanks best rated web hosts… I think contact Nancy, the owner of thefertilityblogs.com for more info – she set it up. I like the fact that we can be on one site and support each other.

[…] on infertility treatments. I added up one year’s treatment (IUI#2) and you can read that post here. The fertility treatment (in 2010) cost almost R6000 but when you add on all the over stuff […]
