It really seems that just yesterday Nicky was just a little baba crawling around. Today he is a Grade Two pupil who has done so well in the past year, despite all that Covid has thrown at us. Last year this time we celebrated by ourselves and some fluffy toys. This year we had a very small party with just a few family and friends. There were just four kids. But it was great to do something special for a very special kid.
Nicky has grown so much this year. He is constantly asking questions. He wants to know all about molecules and atoms and electrons. I have to search answers for questions I have no idea of. He has also been busy lately driving different kinds of cars on the x box and making paper aeroplanes. He’s always inventing things. How’s this water experiment that he made which features a volcano made out of a candle:
Nicky enjoys watching Peppa Pig (although I find it very irritating). When he said he wanted a Peppa Pig party I had to put my own feelings aside and get into the swing of things, muddy puddles and all.
We played a muddy puddle game much like musical chairs where the kids ran around to the “muddy puddle song” while each time I removed a “puddle”. (I made these out of brown card)
We also had a treasure hunt where they had to go and look for cards and find six each – the cards were yellow wellies, muddy puddle, flower, glasses, sunshine, butterfly.
After this the kids just played. They also played soccer with the help of Nicky’s cousins and my boyfriend’s gift which was a soccer ball. Yes, I have a boyfriend. Yes I’m happy!
I got lots of ideas off the internet for the games and food. I printed a few cards and made some food in line with the Peppa Pig theme. Most of it was on a savoury theme although we did have some sweets as well.
We sat outside in the fresh air on my balcony while the kids played soccer on the grass below.
We blew out the “covid cupcake” and had chocolate cake which I decorated with a few Peppa Pig figurines. I kept it pretty simple and there was more than enough for everyone with two Woolworths chocolate cakes.
For the party packs I mainly did sweets but also managed to find Peppa Pig bubbles. Kids really enjoy them.
After the party we dropped off one of the packs and some cake at one of his friends who couldn’t make it due to being in isolation. You can’t come to the party? We’ll bring the party to you…
Another sombre thought that day: I went to a funeral that morning. My friend Nelladee Palane passed from cancer. She was the same age as me. She leaves behind a husband and two children. My heart breaks for these two. And it breaks my heart to see a family going through the hell I went through not so long ago. The grief never leaves you but you rebuild your life again slowly and with meaning.
I’m so glad we could do this small party in these difficult times and still celebrate with all our masks and in the fresh air.
Life is short and we have to take our joy where we can.
Live with purpose my friends and enjoy and appreciate those special moments.
