I am really appreciating my weekends a lot more these days, now that I am working. I enjoy being at home with my family and this week was so hectic I really needed to recharge. And what better way to relax than in my pajamas, surrounded by a mess my son had made, while he jumped up and down on the sofa and made his “house” out of pillows?
This week was a long one for several reasons.
Firstly, my assistant wasn’t there for Monday and Tuesday (her mom was in hospital). On Monday I was quite chilled and drifted happily through the day. It was probably because I fell asleep on Sunday the same time as Nicky and had a good long, solid sleep. By Tuesday I had had enough. I felt like I was constantly cleaning up messes and putting out fires (figuratively of course) and just wasn’t getting anywhere. It was exhausting. Two year olds can be tough.
Wednesday my assistant was back and that was great. I actually managed to get some teaching done. Nicky fell asleep on the way home and had a good long afternoon nap.
On Thursday my boss was down with bronchitis. I missed her a lot but I was well supported by the other staff and her daughter, so we were fine.
That afternoon I had to go on a trip to see our blogging meetup venue, The Open. It turned out to be quite a nice outing for Nicky as they have a little mini golf course there. Of course he had a lot of fun with the balls. His favourite trick was to take a running leap at the flag and fall down on purpose. Oh well, whatever floats your boat, my dear. However it wasn’t really conductive to all the serious business people trying to work there while the lady worked out my invoice so I kept him occupied collecting the balls and drinking juice.
As we drove back home it was 4pm. The worst time to fall asleep. But yes, you guessed it, that is exactly what happened. Nicky couldn’t keep his eyes open and I couldn’t tickle his feet for that long a car journey (this is sometimes my method for short trips). So, he fell asleep, and stayed asleep through that, another trip to fetch DH from a friend with whom he’d obtained a lift, and he kept on sleeping until 8pm.
Yes folks, at this late hour I had already bathed and was quite ready to pass out myself. But Nicky Noodle was awake and grumpy. He wanted several things. To pee, to eat (a jam sandwich: very specific) and drink, of course. I managed to get him back to sleep three hours later. This was 11pm.
I tossed for a bit and then slept until I was rudely awoken by a dog at 4am. Coffee, in all the late night trips to the kitchen, had been shut up in the kitchen with Milo and had decided to have a good bark.
Thanks, Coffee.
Especially on a morning where we had to get up really early to drop DH off and wake up an hour later. Of course, I couldn’t get back to sleep.
I embarked on Friday with minimal sleep. When I’m tired I do stupid things and that morning I put Nicky’s breakfast on the car roof and drove off forgetting it was there. I’ll really miss that bowl. It was one of those cute ones with bunnies that stay on. A good quality one. Sigh. (If you’re wondering if the little dude got to eat – he did- we went back to let in the maid and re-do breakfast)
I managed to get through the school day pretty well. We had fruit salad day which was lots of fun – the kids each brought different fruits and we combined them to make something truly tasty. We have also been doing a lot of Easter art involving lots of bunnies.
Nicky managed to stay awake through the grocery shop but passed out as soon as I dropped the maid off at 3 and again, slept through the trip to pick up DH. I wasn’t that bothered though, because it was a bit earlier and I knew if worst came to worst I could sleep in the next day. He woke up at 6:30 and we managed to do our normal food, bath and story routine, which was great.
I woke up early the next morning but it was with that refreshed feeling of actually having a good night’s sleep behind me. What a wonderful feeling.
After making breakfast I lay down on the couch and Brett put on some comedies on the TV. It was so relaxing. Nicky decided to move all the furniture and pillows around to create whatever he was busy with, but I just let him do it. I let him make a big mess and I just relaxed and let him jump and climb on me. How wonderful just to sit there and know we didn’t have to rush off to get to anywhere (Little Kickers is only at 10:30) and let Nicky just play.
Of course I felt a lot better once I’d got dressed, tidied up and done the dishes.
But sometimes, just lying there in the mess, knowing that there was no urgency to deal with it, is just such a release.
How is your weekend going? How do you unwind?

Oh we had a good one – blogged about it. No grade 4 tests, tasks or orals made all the difference. And a nice hike up the koppie!
