Terrific Twos

June 30, 2014 by heatherss 14 Comments

terrific-twosThere seems to be a lot going on with Nicky these days so I thought I’d just do a bullet point update on how he is doing.

– toddler-climbing-down-jungle-gymLast Wednesday he climbed up a jungle gym all by himself. He needed help a few times to get down but after a while he could do it himself.

– His speech seems to be picking up. It is so subtle and you really have to pay attention and listen carefully, but I can hear little bits of words. Last night he was turning pages in a book saying “What’s that” (or something like that). Of course when I tried to stop and tell him what the pictures were, he wasn’t interested, he just wanted to keep turning! Then this morning he hears a bird in a tree. “Where?” he says. He has also said this before when he dropped a toy. The gestures and grunts are still in place, but now are accompanied by “Mama!”

– photo (1)Cars are so calming. Other kids like to sleep with their teddies or a special blanky. Nicky finds comfort in a car he can push back and forth. Boob plus car equals sleep. When we go anywhere, a car must come with.

– Yes we have tantrums. He likes to throw himself down on the floor and cry when things aren’t going his way. But, we get through them. I keep learning about what he needs (food? sleep? attention?) and giving one of those three normally helps. By the way – a great article on tantrums is here.

-He is eating more and finishing his plate. He seems to have more of an appetite now. But is still particular about what he eats. At the moment the fave is yoghurt covered rice cakes. And he still loves boob.

-Sleep seems to be going backwards. We had a few nights of frequent wakings but now seem to be back on track. I have learnt also that it is no good sending him to sleep before he is ready – it will just frustrate me.

– pouringI am trying to do more activities with him and have dug out my Montessori practical life file. He loves pouring into different containers.

My son loves the car thing too! He lays on the floor and pushes cars back and forth, it does seems very calming to him.

You are so right about not putting him down for bed until he is ready….we tried to do that a few times with ours and it’s really more effective to just wait until they are ready!

shame, I know the feeling, when you really want them to go to bed and they aren’t ready…

Jack also doesn’t like a teddy or a blanky – he will cuddle his spiderman or a dinosaur or something like that 🙂

The talking thing happens so fast – one minute there are a few words and the next minute they are talking the hind leg off a donkey!

Cool about taking the toys to sleep, I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one.

These twos sound terrific to me! 😀 I too find that tantrums mainly occur when they’re sleep-deprived or hungry! Of course, there are the occasional ones when they really badly need to have candy or an expensive toy they saw at the store etc, but I mainly just ignored those and once the audience was gone, my kids usually just gave up mid-scream!! LOL!!
